  8. The ‘CD Database’ was formerly known as ‘The CD Catalog’ until I was informed that there already was a program
  9. named the CD Catalog that was released well before my version.  I was not aware of this until the author of The
  10. Original CD Catalog pointed this out. I apologize for any confusion that this may have caused.

  12. What is the CD Database?

The CD Database© is a simple yet powerful database to catalog your Compact Discs.  It was made with FileMaker Pro version 2.1 and you need FileMaker 2.1 or later to use it.  Not only may you search and print lists of your CD collection; but you can generate reports and lists for specific categories of CDs, such as only your CDs that are Soundtracks or are longer than 65 minutes.  The program should be self explanatory but here's a simple manual anyway.  Please see the copyright notice at the end of this document.

  16. How can I enter my CDs?

  18. 1. Click the Entry/Browse Button

  20. 2. Click the New Entry Button

  22. 3. Type in the requested information.

  24. You may delete the five CDs that are already entered, they are just there for examples.

You should probably look at all of the classifications before you enter your CDs, this way you will get an idea of how you want your CDs categorized. I put all of the catagories of music I could think of and left three Miscellaneous catagories so you could add a few of you own catagories.  Classifying music can be hard to do and some of the catagories may overlap such as ROCK HARD and METAL or ALTERNATIVE and INDUSTRIAL etc.;  choose which ever is closest.  (You could always just ignore my categories and type in your own, but your categories will not appear in the Report layout.)

  28. Also, be sure to type in the last name FIRST, followed by the artist first name when your entering the artist's name.  This way when you sort by artist everything is in order.  Group names may be typed in as they are.

  30. How can I print my CDs?

  32. 1. From the Main Menu, Click on one of the 7 print layouts:
  33.   • Artist/Album
  34.   • Album/Artist
  35.   • Artist/Album/Label/Year
  36.   • Album/Artist/Label/Year
  37.   • Artist/Title/Songs/Song Time
  38.      • Complete (Use should a laser or other high-quality printer when printing this layout.)

  41. (The Song/SongTime/Artist/Album layout is actually puts information into a new FileMaker Pro Document because it breaks up the repeating field for songs and song times into separate records, it may take a while to do this depending on how many CDs you have.)

  48. How can I generate a report of my CDs?

  50. 1. From the Main Menu, Click on Generate Report.

Click on Add % if you wish to add percentages to some of the statistics (It will take a while to generate percentages, especially if you have a lot of CDs). Also note that the report layout uses the Mac's internal clock for some of the year calculations, be sure it is set correctly (you can change the date and time in the "General" control panel).

  54. How do I search and separate my CDs?

  56. 1. From the Main Menu, Click on the Entry/Browse Button

  62. After you have completed your find, you will will be working only with the CDs that matched your criteria, until you press a find all button.  You may print or generate a report on that found set just as if it were all your CDs.

  66. Preview = Print Preview (Shows what the document will look like when you print it) Press Return to continue.

  68. How do I import all the data from my old version of "The CD Catalog" into The CD Database?

  70. 1. Open The CD Database version 1.0

  72. 2. Goto the File Menu, select Import/Export, and select Import Records... (File-->Import/Export-->Import Records...)

  74. 3. Locate your old version of "The CD Catalog" and click the 'Open' button

  76. 4. Click on the 'Match Fields' button.

  80. 6. When FileMaker asks how you want to 'Import values in repeating fields by' select 'Keeping them in the original record' if it isn't already selected and click the 'OK' button
